Canine Obesity

In the United States, canine obesity is a growing epidemic. Like humans, excess body fat is associated with many adverse health effects including heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, increased cancer risk and decreased life expectancy. A great way to protect your dog from obesity is to ensure he/she gets plenty of exercise. Giving proper food portions and treats in moderation are crucial to your dog’s weight control as well. If you are unsure about your dog’s ideal weight, please have your dog evaluated by a veterinarian.

Adoption vs Purchasing an Animal

Posted on Tuesday, August 02, 2011 2:35 PM

As an avid animal lover, I am dedicated to helping animals receive proper care and loving homes. There are an estimated 3-4 million healthy animals euthanized in the US each year. The overcrowding in shelters is astounding. Luckily, there are many devoted volunteers willing to give their time to help keep shelters running. Unfortunately, there are not enough resources save every animal. Together, we can help by adopting and saving one life at a time.

I found the information below helpful in deciding whether adoption is right for you.

Reasons for adopting from a shelter rather than buying from a Animal Welfare Network on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 5:57pm

The three main reasons are:

1. Buying a pet from a pet store or from a breeder encourages persons (usually the pet shop owners) to keep breeding for more puppies. When these cute puppies have grown out of their puppy stages some are actually dumped or dropped of for shelters.

2. Most pet stores do not treat their animals properly and as long as they are getting a sale they will continue to ... See More torture the poor animals in those filthy cages. These puppies get no affection and suffer alone. If we stop purchasing they will stop using these poor animals for their own financial gain.

3. There are so many unwanted animals out there alive and needing homes and love. If you don't encourage the unnecessary breeding of more animals you give the ones that are alive a chance. Adopting from shelters gives the ones that are there a chance... less animals get turned away, less animals have to suffer on the streets, and less animals gets killed / "put down". SO ADOPT FROM SHELTERS... HELP CREATE SOME GOOD KARMA.
